In Alma chapter
38, Alma is giving counsel to his son Shiblon. He says the following to him in
verses 4 and 5:
4 For
I know that thou wast in bonds; yea, and I also know that thou wast stoned for
the word’s sake; and thou didst bear all these things with patience because
the Lord was with thee; and now thou knowest that the Lord did deliver
thee.
5 And now my son, Shiblon, I would that ye
should remember, that as much as ye shall put your trust in God even
so much ye shall be delivered out of your trials, and your troubles,
and your afflictions, and ye shall be lifted up at the last day.
This verse is important to me because Alma recognizes
that Shiblon endured his trials with patience because the Lord was with him. We
face trials every day, sometimes small and sometimes big, and to me it seems
like patience is the first thing that goes while during a trial. What I like so
much about these verses is that we are shown that trials can be born with patience
if the Lord is with us. I believe the first step in having the Lord with us or
His Spirit with us is to pray and ask for it. We could pray and ask for patience
in the hard time and we will be given strength, just like Shiblon, to make it
through with a positive outlook and eternal perspective.
