Recently,
I learned a deeper meaning of a scripture, 3 Nephi 3:2. Jesus is teaching the
Nephites about how they should give alms.
2 Therefore,
when ye shall do your alms do not sound a trumpet before you, as will
hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of
men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.
My professor explained that the
meaning of the word hypocrites has changed over the years. In the time period
this scripture was written, hypocrites was meant slightly differently than we
understand it today. A hypocrite is actually an actor who is able to put on a
masks and robes and play multiple characters for a performance. They can
portray them self however they please. What Jesus is teaching is that we should
not put on a performance when we give donations or do good in general. We
should not put on a performance at church so that people think we are a certain
way that is inconsistent with who we really are. If we do, we already receive
our reward which is the praise of men.
